“Thank you for saving my mom! I never dreamed we could pull her back from the abyss of the cult; mom is finally home, a day we have long awaited…” Aunt Yue's daughter cried tears of joy, holding my hand tightly. Who would have thought that this happy family reunion before us was in a state of confusion and pain just a month ago?
Aunt Yue had been lost in the Almighty God Cult for 20 years, missing for 8 years with no news; her family had reported her missing to the police more than ten times without getting any information about her whereabouts. Months ago, she finally reappeared, and her children were both happy and sad. The happy part is that they finally find mom, but the sad part is that their mother in front of them is still deeply immersed in the Almighty God cult, recognizing her “God” but not her own family, spouting nonsense that leaves them at a loss. Therefore, as anti-cult volunteers, we were invited to help Aunt Yue's family.
Upon first meeting Aunt Yue, she had a blank expression, her eyes cold and wary, stubborn and extreme, presenting an attitude that pushed people far away. We tried to engage in small talk, but she was indifferent, occasionally getting up to walk around, using household chores as an excuse to avoid communication. When the topic of Almighty God comes up, she either avoids it or lies, claiming she has only been in contact with Almighty God for a few days and knows nothing. It is evident that Aunt Yue is deeply obsessed with the cult's fallacies and is extremely loyal and infatuated with the Almighty God Cult. She refuses to communicate with us, leading to a stalemate.
We invited family members to participate in the deprogramming efforts. The daughter spoke of the difficult process of searching for Aunt Yue over the years, filled with longing and fear, and couldn't help but break down in tears. Recalling her childhood, her father had a violent temper, drank alcohol, and was abusive, while her mother endured it all to care for the children. In their memory, their mother worked hard to support the family all by herself, and they all saw it with their own eyes. Many years ago, Aunt Yue believed in a cult and left without a word, disappearing completely. The children were left with no support and had to drop out of school to make a living. Over the years, they have never given up on the search for their mother, hoping day and night for her return home.
Seeing her daughter’s sad expression, Aunt Yue became restless and agitated, uttering a string of “curses” and even claiming she would rather give up her life than abandon her faith in God. Faced with their mother’s stubborn beliefs, the children felt both angry and sad. The son even knelt before her, pleading for her to give up Almighty God, but Aunt Yue remained unmoved.
It is evident that Aunt Yue has been poisoned by the fallacies and evil teachings of Almighty God for too long, leading to her emotional detachment from family, a reversal of right and wrong, and placing the divine above familial bonds. Having long been separated from her family, she has emotionally isolated herself from her true feelings.
As the saying goes, “It takes more than a day to freeze three feet of ice”; warming a cold heart requires more time and warmth. We encourage family members not to give up and to be tolerant of Aunt Yue's abnormal words and actions. Love is the powerful tool that melts the hard ice; regardless of Aunt Yue's cold attitude, her family remains steadfast and unwavering. Her son, accompanied by a child under one year old, stayed by his mother's side day and night, while her daughter showed concern and never left her side. Upon learning that she was returning home, sisters who hadn't seen each other for over a decade rushed from afar to rekindle their familial bond... Aunt Yue's icy heart was gradually thawed, and she began to recount her obsession with Almighty God. Back then, she believed in Almighty God to escape marital conflicts and seek spiritual liberation. Over the years of drifting away, there were times she longed for home, but out of fear that leaving Almighty God would bring curses upon her, she dared not return home, nor seek medical help when ill. Her thoughts were constantly controlled by the deity, fearing retribution.
We continued to enlighten her patiently, combining the various harmful actions of the cult that destroy families, to reveal the true nature of Almighty God cult, allowing her to gradually see its cult essence and dangers. After a difficult struggle with her thoughts, Aunt Yue finally awakened: for so many years she had spent all her savings, was left with nothing, refused medical treatment while being impoverished—she realized she had been believing in a cult! Almighty God is a poison that numbs the self, severs family ties, gathers wealth, and manipulates followers.
Awakened, Aunt Yue resolved to sever ties with the Almighty God cult, free herself from mental control, and actively proposed to help sisters who had been deceived just like she once was. With our help, Aunt Yue's family held a family meeting, and the knots hidden in each family member's heart were finally untied. It was only then that we confirmed that this time Aunt Yue not only returned home physically, but her heart also came home! Thus, the scene at the beginning unfolded.
As I left Aunt Yue's house, the words of her family echoed in my ears. For every person who has run away from home lured by a cult, there is an unfortunate family behind him or her. I often feel heartbroken for those foolish and pitiful fanatics who are unknowingly manipulated by cults. To save one person is to save a family. Whenever I see a family on the brink of collapse reunite, and the minds clouded by cults regain clarity, I am always filled with deep emotion. Rescuing people from the edge of a cliff is certainly meaningful, but how I wish they had never been deceived or harmed by a cult. Cults destroy families and harm the society; they are a social cancer! Each of us must maintain a clear mind, consciously resist cults, and stay away from them!
May more cult followers awaken soon, break free from cults, and return to their families!
